Where you work:
During the week I work at MercyOne Genesis Psychology Associates in Davenport, IA. I also work occasional weekends at the University of Iowa covering the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU).
Typical day in your shoes:
Mornings are hectic with getting my three young kids ready for daycare/school. I then work as an outpatient psychiatrist for both adults and children. Most of my appointments are a combination of medication management and psychotherapy. I will have a first year family medicine rotate with me for a few half days each month. I also spend approximately 8-12 weekends per year covering the Crisis Stabilization Unit at the University of Iowa. This is a short-term observation unit for adults that are having a mental health crisis. We are able to provide a safe environment, prescribe medications and link them with community resources.
Favorite part of being a psychiatrist:
As cliche as it sounds, I love being able to make a positive impact in another person’s life– providing hope when they need it and celebrating their successes. I also like that psychiatry has a variety of practice settings and flexible scheduling if desired.
Best advice you’ve ever heard: “Never work harder than your patient.”
Favorite vacation experience/destination:
I am looking forward to an upcoming trip to Norway this August.
